Pa. school security goes to head of the CLASS

School security concerns have created a whole new meaning for the word CLASS at Greencastle-Antrim elementary and primary schools in Pennsylvania.
The schools have developed a $6,000 program called "Children Leaving a School Safely," or CLASS, which creates "simpler and safer sign-out" of grade school children at the end of the day, Pa. Director of Elementary Education Greg Hoover tells the Waynesboro Record Herald....

Security concerns influence school design

A 2005 school security and land price study has prompted school officials in Collier County, Fla., to change the way they build new schools.
Officials sought a new design for schools to keep students in a more enclosed space, according to a report in the Bonita Daily News. Veterans Memorial Elementary School, scheduled to open in the fall, will be the last one-story, open-air school built in Collier County, says Alvah Hardy, executive director of facilities management for the district....

Universities especially vulnerable to ID theft

Universities have become attractive targets for hackers who are taking advantage of the openness of the schools' networks, their decentralized security and the personal information they keep on millions of young adults, The Associated Press reports.
A major database breach at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), that went undetected for more than a year and a smaller breach at the University of Texas are the latest examples of how vulnerable colleges are to such attacks....

N.Y. schools implement security technology

Several New York local school districts have increased spending on security after recent school shootings across the country.
Administrators say they think preventative measures already in place -- including single points of entry and checking in visitors -- work well.
But some school leaders say they are constantly looking for ways to make their schools more secure, and money put toward students' safety is well spent....

Web-based tip line may solve some school security issues

At a private Web site, students can now send secret messages to staff at Westfield High School in Texas about their own -- and other people's -- problems, The Houston Chronicle reports.
In the Houston area, Westfield and at least two other schools have tried the e-mail system developed by a Houston nonprofit organization and now run by AnComm, a Mississippi-based company with its own MySpace page. More than 40 schools use it nationwide....

Security tips for school administrators

President Bush today called experts together after three deadly shootings at schools in Wisconsin, Colorado and Pennsylvania (see securitysolutions.com/news/school-shootings-security-concerns/).
In panel discussions led by members of Bush's Cabinet, speakers said the best response is basic: get parents, school leaders, students and police to work together.
"Our first line of prevention is really having good intelligence," said Delbert Elliott, director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence in Boulder, Colo. He said schools should encourage kids to speak up when they hear classmates boasting of violent plans. The Bush Administration, compelled to respond to the violence of the last two weeks, said a public sharing of ideas would help because the nation is suddenly focused on school safety.
With school security top-of-mind, here is a checklist to help school administrators determine potential weaknesses in campus security, from Patrick V. Fiel Sr., a public safety adviser specializing in education for ADT Security Services Inc.:...

New wave of shootings brings school security back to the forefront

* A drifter walks into a Colorado school and fatally shoots a student before taking his own life.
* Wisconsin authorities charge three boys with plotting a bomb attack on their high school.
* A student in a rural school allegedly shoots his principal.
* A gunman bursts into a Vermont elementary school looking for his ex-girlfriend and guns down a teacher.
